Starting dreadlocks is a process of creating rope-like strands of matted hair that are woven and twisted together to form the distinctive hairstyle known as dreadlocks. The process involves sectioning the hair and using a variety of techniques such as backcombing, twist and rip, or interlocking to create the desired dreadlock style. For European hair types, the process of starting dreadlocks typically requires some initial work to prepare the hair for matting and locking. This may include growing the hair to a certain length, avoiding the use of conditioners or hair products that could prevent matting, and separating the hair into sections to ensure even locking. Once the hair is prepared, the process of starting dreadlocks may take 5 hours or even days, depending on the desired style and the thickness and length of the hair. During this time, the hair is twisted, backcombed, or interlocked to create the individual dreadlocks, and then left to naturally mat and lock over time.
